Originally built for an Australian customer, L9786 was passed to the Air Ministry after the order was cancelled. Short fitted it with a central float that was a scale replica of that used on the Sunderland. L9786 was delivered to Felixstowe where it continued to be used for test flying for many years. It crashed into the River Clyde on March 14, 1944 while deployed to RAF Helensburgh in Scotland.
