This Fw 190, on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center, was built in late 1943 as the A-7 fighter 640049. After suffering combat damage it was repaired and remanufactured into an Fw 190 F-8 fighter-bomber with a new Werk-Nummer. The conversion involved fitting a new wing and bomb racks to the original fuselage and adding armour plate around and beneath the cockpit. Reissued to the Luftwaffe, the aircraft flew on the Eastern Front, probably with SG 2 based in Hungary in Oct. 1944. This photo is copyright © Alastair T.
