Straddling the Lincolnshire and Leicestershire border and close to Nottinghamshire too, the former RAF Bottesford had a very short life. It opened in Autumn 1941 with Avro Manchesters but soon converted to Lancasters. It was transfered to USAAF use in August 1943 for the reception of Dakotas from the USA. Returned to the RAF for heavy bomber training in late 1944, flying had more or less finished by the end of 1945 and though used for a short time for storage it was sold in 1948. Seen at the de Havilland Moth Club fly in performing an aerobatic display. Built in 1929, this aircraft is believed to be the oldest in the world that is allowed to perfom aerobatics in public. This photograph was the cover of the Moth Club magazine

This is an overview of the DH Moth Club Rally held at Belvoir Castle for the only time, unfortunately as it is close to my home! Though early in the day over 60 aircraft are already present and the Castle can be seen as a backdrop. The newly laid runway is at the bottom right.
