Many years ago while "Enola Gay" was still dismantled and in store at the Silver Hill facility, I once had the eerie experience of being able to go on board and sit in the bombadier's seat. Of course this is the Superfortress which dropped the world's first atomic bomb used in warfare on Hiroshima on 6.8.45

Although flown by the 58th TTW in full USAF markings, the Starfighters at Luke were German-owned and used to train pilots without the weather and airspace constraints of Europe. They even had WGAF serials allocated, this one being 27+64. This one is unusual in that it was painted grey - most were natural metal like the one next up the serial range parked behind

The first production Hercules to be built, following two YC-130 prototypes, made its maiden flight on 7.4.55 as a C-130A with the original blunt nose. The left wing burned off after a fuel leak on her third flight, but repaired. Converted to AC-130A gunship in 11.67, serving with a number of units in Vietnam (hit by a 37mm shell in 1971). Seen here in service with the 711th SOS; after withdrawal from duty in 1995, placed on permanent display at the USAF Armament Museum, Eglin AFB

Seen at her home base during an Open House held unusually late in the year, this shiny-looking VT-29B of the 513th Air Base Sqdn made her last flight to Duxford on 29.6.75 on donation to the IWM, but unfortunately was neglected and scrapped in the Nineties
