380BW FB-111A just over the approach end of runway 32 at March AFB

Served at this time within 380 BW. Now preserved at Plattsburgh AB.

One of the very few occasions--perhaps even the only one--on which an FB-111 touched down in Europe. This time on the occasion of the Tiger Meet. Note the tiger motive on the tail.

Operated by the 509th BW based at Pease AFB, NH. 'Milk Wagon' nose art has been applied. The aircraft design and engine thrust enabled operations above 60,000 feet exceeding speeds of Mach 2.5. The terrain following radar was unique in its ability to fly the aircraft over obstacles as low as 200 feet, at speeds of Mach 1.1.

The F-111 was always a bomber, and in the end a 'strategic' variant was produced as the FB-111. This is the first FB-111 pre-production aircraft, first flown on 13 July 1968. According to some sources it ultimately became an F-111G.
