The Square-T tail marking identifies the unit as the 2nd Bombardment Wing, then based at Hunter AFB, Georgia. The unit was deployed to RAF Mildenhall, UK from May to September, 1951, so the aircraft in the photo are undoubtedly enroute to the UK. In 1951 what was to be Thule AB was still under construction and was in Top Secret status. It was officially revealed and named in 1953, and was known as Thule AB until the name was changed in April, 2023. Photo by: Margaret Bourke-White / Life

B-50D of 43 Bomb Wing, 15th Air Force, wearing the name "Thunderbird" on its nose making a very low level run at Yeadon during the 1953 SSAFA air show. Built as a B-50A, it had later been modified to B-50D standard including fitment of underwing tanks. This was the last rotation of an SAC B-50 wing through the UK before full replacement by B-47 Stratojets.
