The Ar 231 light scout was designed to be carried by Type XI U-boats. To ease folding the right wing half was mounted lower than the left half. Flying characteristics were poor, the airframe flimsy and the Type XI cancelled anyway. The merchant raider Stier went to war with two Ar 231s in May 1942. Two flights were attempted and each time a float strut broke.
