Gloucestershire Aircraft changed its name to the simpler Gloster in 1926. The Sparrowhawk was a development of the Nieuport Nighthawk for the Japanese Navy. The Mk.I was a single seat fighter, the Mk.II a trainer, the Mk.III a carrier aircraft. Japan acquired 90 aircraft, some built locally.
