ERA Helicopters of Alaska established an offshore bases in Louisiana and Texas in the late 1970s to support offshore oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. In the 1980s Era distinguished itself in the Gulf of Mexico by operating an all twin-engine helicopter fleet of MBB Bo 105s and Bell 412s, for which it was the launch customer, but single engine aircraft were added when it won contracts to fly Minerals Management Service (MMS) (now BSEE) inspectors monitoring offshore activity.
