This is the third Lancaster modified for carrying the bouncing dam-busting bomb designed by Barnes Wallis. It was to be the reserve aircraft for 617 Sqn's May 16/17, 1943, raid but was used, flown by American-born RCAF pilot Joe McCarthy against the Sorpe Dam. Hit the target but the dam was not breached. ED825 was shot down on December 10, 1943 while on a mission over France to drop agents. All the crew were killed. McCarthy had been moved to another squadron by then. Highly decorated, he survived the war and died in 1998. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
