While the French industry was struggling to recover, the British could show state-of-the-art war machines at the 1946 Salon. VB857 was a Sea Fury prototype begun by Boulton-Paul, but with the end of the war in sight, Sea Fury production at Boulton-Paul was cancelled and VB857 was completed by Hawker. Of the two Gloster Meteor F.4s, the rear one with the long-span wing is EE549, then holder of the official absolute world speed record at 991 km/h (616 mph). The British Ministry of Defence ordered an initial batch of 60 Gazelles on 21 August 1970. Of those, 29 were destined for the Army Air Corps, 10 for the Royal Air Force and 21 for the Royal Navy, among them XW895. Based at RNAS Culdrose, this very airframe also flew for the Royal Navy's "The Sharks" Display team as can be seen on the vertical fin. The airframe was at one point registered as G-BXZD and then sold / exported to Ukraine in December 2006. Fate unknown, scanned from a slide.

To get extra life out of the inadequate Roc fighter, floats were fitted with the aim of producing a target tug to replace Blackburn Shark floatplanes used in the role by the FAA. L3059 was the prototype. It showed instability and was wrecked in an accident at the Helensburgh Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment in December 1939. A second conversion with an enlarged ventral fin was completed but its performance was poor. The FAA ended up replacing its Shark target tugs with landplanes. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
