A tandem-seat military variant of the Aeronca Chief, the L-3, originally designated O-58, was produced in relatively modest numbers by WWII standards - just 1400 or so. It was used mainly for training Piper L-4 and Stinson L-5 pilots. This one, 42-36161, is listed as written off on 11 December 1942 at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, but it was repaired. A tandem-seat military variant of the Aeronca Chief, the L-3, originally designated O-58, was produced in relatively modest numbers by WWII standards - just 1400 or so. It was used mainly for training Piper L-4 and Stinson L-5 pilots. This one, 42-36161, is listed as written off on 11 December 1942 at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, but it was repaired.
