A pure research aircraft built to test (among other things) the low-speed characteristics of the Lightning wing design. Made its last flight on 7 March 1968 after which it was preserved by the RAF Museum as 8005M.

Built by Shots Brothers & Harland and used by the RAE to investigate different wing sweep angles and tailplane positions, prior to the development of the Lightning interceptor. Behind is the P1A, one of three research prototypes used in the development of the Lightning.

This research aircraft was built to test the slow speed handling of a sharply swept wing as used on the English Electric Lightning. The wing could be mounted at 50, 60 or 69 degrees of sweep and the tail section with low-set tailplane seen here could be replaced with a T-tail. The undercarriage was not retractable.

Test aircraft used to evaluate variable degrees of wing sweep. It previously served the Empire Test Pilot School at RAE Farnborough with code '28'. Now preserved at Cosford.
