Equipped an Armstrong Siddeley Genet Major engine. Reportedly transferred to the French Air Force and possibly even used at the flying school at Evreux and later Moissac. Location might be Schiphol, but that remains unconfirmed. The Fokker S.IX was developed in the mid-1930's as a military trainer, following a request by the Dutch Navy for a replacement aircraft for the Fokker III. Its first flight was on 1 November 1937 and about 50 frames were bult. The Dutch Navy initially ordered 27 aircraft but later reduced this number to 15. The Air Force ordered 20 aircraft, but with a different engine (the Genet Major engine). A later order for 20 more aircraft was canceled when Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940. Photo from W. The Fokker S.IX prototype, portrayed at Schiphol. The Menasco Buccaneer-powered aircraft for the Dutch navy replaced the old S.III trainer. All 15 were destroyed in May 1940. Ryan trainers were then acquired by the navy in the Netherlands East Indies. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

First S.IX for the Netherlands army. The naval version of the S.IX elementary trainer was powered by a Menasco Buccaneer inline engine, the army version by an Armstrong Siddeley Genet Major radial. Licence production of the Genet by the Kromhout company in Amsterdam proved troublesome and used engines had to be purchased in Britain for the first twelve aircraft. Three S.IX and eight Koolhoven FK.43 aircraft were built by Fokker after World War II. PH-NAR is seen over of The Hague with the parliament buildings below the nose. The photo source alleges that this is a composite picture, perhaps because the 'pilot' in the front seat is taking a photo. Photo from: Haags Gemeentearchief

The navy's training aircraft lined up. The occasion may have been a change of command at the naval airfield on 20 October 1938. The new S.IX elementary trainers, middle row, replaced the antiquated S.IIIs, on the right. On the left are Koolhoven FK.51 intermediate trainers. Photo from: Bodo Sandberg collection
