Built by Siebelwerke-Allgemeine-Transportanlagen (SIAT) at Donauwörth, the 4 seat, all metal, SIAT 222 first flew on May 15, 1961. Displayed at that years Paris Salon, it crashed during a spin test on 29th September 1961 killing the pilot, aerobatic champion Albert Falderbaum. The design was developed into the more successful SIAT 223 Flamingo which featured a shorter fuselage, larger vertical stabiliser and redesigned wings.
