Sole example of the P-49 intended to provide higher performance than the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. After indecision on a new engine, the experimental Continental XIV-1430 V-12 engine was selected. This engine never went into production while flight testing revealed the XP-49 was slower than the P-38J. The project was cancelled and the prototype scrapped.
