Built as an A-101, at the time of the accident VH-UHV had been fitted with a Kinner K-5 radial like the later A-129. The aircraft was on a shark patrol when the engine failed. The pilot glided towards Harbord Park but children prevented him landing. The pilot called to the children clear the park. UHV stalled and crashed in scrubland adjoining the park on second approach. Pilot and passenger injured. The area around the park now completely built out and the park is likely a lot smaller than it was in 1935. Photo from: State Library of New South Wales

The American Eagle A-1 was designed in late 1925 as a training aircraft to replace WWI biplanes, such as the venerable Jenny, then in use by the Porterfield Flying School. The prototype A-1 first flew at Richards Field in Kansas City, MO on 9 April 1926. Small modifications made to the design in 1927, including ailerons on the lower wings, led to the A-101 designation and approximately 300 in total were built. It is on display at the Yanks Air Museum.
