The precursor of the Wal, the Dornier Gs 1 was designed for the Imperial German Navy. The sole example was completed at Seemoos in July 1919. It was converted into an airliner and evaluated by Ad Astra, registered as CH-8 from October 1919. In March 1920 it was demonstrated at De Mok, Netherlands. En route to Sweden for a demonstration it was scuttled outside Kiel, Germany in April 1920 to prevent seizure by the Allied Control Commission.
