Do 18 civil prototype, presumably photographed near the factory on Lake Constance. Named Aeolus by Lufthansa, the mailplane was catapulted by a DLH vessel off Horta, Azores and flew to Bermuda on 11 September 1936, continuing to New York the next day. Lost in July 1937 after an emergency landing in the Atlantic due to engine trouble.

The precursor of the Wal, the Dornier Gs 1 was designed for the Imperial German Navy. The sole example was completed at Seemoos in July 1919. It was converted into an airliner and evaluated by Ad Astra, registered as CH-8 from October 1919. In March 1920 it was demonstrated at De Mok, Netherlands. En route to Sweden for a demonstration it was scuttled outside Kiel, Germany in April 1920 to prevent seizure by the Allied Control Commission. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich
