The captured German cruiser Prinz Eugen sailed to the USA in 1946 with two Ar 196s on board. The ship's catapult was installed at Mustin Field and some test launches were carried out with spurious markings painted on this aircraft. These were simply copied from an old publicity photo of Ar 196A-4 GA-DX, c/n 0124. This airframe, really an Ar 196A-5 built by Fokker in Amsterdam, is currently in National Air and Space Museum custody for possible restoration. The other Ar 196 from Prinz Eugen is now back in Germany, at Nordholz. This photo was added on 7 April 2021, and has since been viewed 2789 times. |
