The date of this photograph makes it the prototype N-1 which apparently crashed before getting airborne. Although it was rebuilt, it was the second N-1 which made the maiden flight. Also known as the Davis Gun Carrier on account of the heavy calibre intended to be fitted to. Project cancelled after four aircraft, two of which were written off. The captured German cruiser Prinz Eugen sailed to the USA in 1946 with two Ar 196s on board. The ship's catapult was installed at Mustin Field and some test launches were carried out with spurious markings painted on this aircraft. These were simply copied from an old publicity photo of Ar 196A-4 GA-DX, c/n 0124. This airframe, really an Ar 196A-5 built by Fokker in Amsterdam, is currently in National Air and Space Museum custody for possible restoration. The other Ar 196 from Prinz Eugen is now back in Germany, at Nordholz.

The sole Boeing PB first flew in 1925 and was intended as a long range naval patrol bomber able to fly non-stop from California to Hawaii. It did not go into US Navy operational service. In 1928 it was modified as the XPB-2 and fitted with two P & W R-1860 of 800 hp in 'push-pull' configuration. From Boeing 60 years ago.
