Ship No. 5 was American Airlines' third DC-10 on the production line, but the first one delivered on July 29, 1971. It also operated the first DC-10 service on August 5, just beating out United Airlines. On June 12, 1972 climbing through 11,750 ft on a Chicago - Buffalo flight, the small aft bulk cargo door opened and separated causing a loss of pressurization and the cabin floor in the area to collapse. The aircraft managed to return to Chicago. The Luxury Liner was sold to Federal Express February 12, 1997 for parts and it was later broken up at Goodyear airport in Phoenix, AZ.
