This swept-wing prototype was a converted F-84E, yet its designation was YF-96A. This was soon changed to YF-84F to sell the project as low-risk, even though the eventual Thunderstreak had little in common with the Thunderjet. The photo is thought to have been taken after rollout at Farmingdale with a posing pilot - the jet was apparently taken to Edwards for its first flight on 6 June 1950.
