This was the prototype YF-84F (originally designated YF-96A). It was later converted into the YRF-84F for the FICON program. As of 2022 this a/c is in storage at the USAF Museum. This slide was taken at the outdoor aircraft display area at the original museum on Patterson AFB.

This swept-wing prototype was a converted F-84E, yet its designation was YF-96A. This was soon changed to YF-84F to sell the project as low-risk, even though the eventual Thunderstreak had little in common with the Thunderjet. The photo is thought to have been taken after rollout at Farmingdale with a posing pilot - the jet was apparently taken to Edwards for its first flight on 6 June 1950. Originally designated YF-96A, it featured the fuselage of the last production F-84E fitted with sweptback wing and horizontal tail. Note the round intake of the f-84E as opposed to the ovular intake of production F-84Fs. The change was required to accommodate the increased airflow needs of the more powerful J65 engine which replaced the J35 of the F-84E and YF-96A.Iit's last use was in the development of the FICON parasite fighter for the B-36 with the addition of a nose hook and negative dihedral on the horizontal tail surfaces.

This is the unique FICON (FIghter CONveyor) modification of the prototype Thunderflash, designed to operate as a parasite fighter from a mother-ship B-36 (in fact GRB-36F) using a trapeze mechanism. Whilst technically successful, the operation was very challenging even for experienced pilots with several near disasters while unhooking or recovering. After a number of RF-84Ks were trialled by SAC in 1955-56, the project was dropped. The aircraft is now displayed indoors in the 91st SRS markings carried in the mid-1950s
