This aircraft was built to a 1941 USAAF order as a Continental R-760-powered PT-17 Stearman, serial 41-7969. Post-war it was civil registered in the USA as N57044, later N70KB. At some stage it was converted to take a higher-powered Pratt & Whitney R-985-AN-1. Exported to Australia, it became VH-RAC(3) on 26 March 1997.
