Reputed to have been the first Allied aircraft to land in southern France during the Operation Dragoon invasion after being forced down due to a technical problem. The pilot was Stanley F. Fierstein. This photo may be that event because the airstrip is very rough and sandy. 111 TFS was based at Frejus following the invasion but it was an established airfield. Some sources say this photo was taken in Sicily but the National Archives says it is the south of France. Val Gal II was scrapped in 1946.
