The R-3 was a two-seat trainer designed by Shiro Yoshihara. J-BEPB was flown from Tokyo to London via Siberia and then to Rome by Hosei University students Moritaka Kurimura and Ryotaro Kumakawa. Markings include NGKR - Nihon Gakusei Koku Renmei (Japanese Student Flying Society) and 第十義勇 or 'No 10 Volunteer Army'.
