This 109 was built as a E-1 in 1939 and fought in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. After upgrade to E-7 it was delivered to the Eastern Front and flown by Wulf-Dietrich Widowitz (36 victories). On 4th April 1942 Widowitz was shot down by a Hurricane and forced to make an emergency (but near perfect) landing on a frozen lake. The aircraft eventually sank through the ice and remained on the lake bed until recovery in 2003. It is pictured here awaiting restoration at the Planes of Fame museum This photo is copyright © Alastair T. Gardiner, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
