"American" on display at the Royal Thai Air Force Museum. Under Farm Gate, the USAF used the A-1 in the 1st and 602nd ACS (later SOS) from 1964. Flying CAS, interdiction missions and escorting SAR helicopters as a flight, A-1s with callsign "Sandy" were unmatched in their role during the Vietnam War, being able to loiter long and suppress enemy fire. This ex-USN aircraft taken on charge by the USAF in Feb 1968 as 52-142072 was hit by AAA over Laos on 27 Dec 1968 that caused a wheels-up landing at Udorn. The 602nd SOS aircraft was donated to the museum in 1979. This photo is copyright © Arjun Sarup, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
