Last of the development batch of F.1s on at RAF Museum Cosford. The F.1 was powered by two vertically mounted Avon Mk 201s, with No.2 engine being on top and further aft in the staggered arrangement. This aircraft was used to test various aspects of the aircraft's design, powerplant and trial the Red Top missile. It received a square fin with 15% greater area for F.3 trials. The top view shows Firestreaks, the 60⁰ swept wings and ailerons with honeycomb tips, and the small pivoting tailplane. Renowned for its phenomenal rate of climb, the Lightning could go vertically at 20,000 ft/min. This photo is copyright © Arjun Sarup, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
