This was one of two F/A-18F a/c available for the West Coast Super Hornet Demonstration Team pilot to fly at the airshow, the other one being a spare if needed. VFA-122 is the west coast F/A-18E/F training squadron, and the demo pilots are selected from the instructor cadre.
