Although this was a civilian S-43, it has been finished to represent an aircraft of VMJ-2, San Diego, ca. 1939 that was destroyed by fire in 1942. Built in 1937, this "Baby Clipper" was delivered to Inter-Island Airways as NC16934 in 1937 and was sold to Alaska Airlines in 1949. In June 1951 it was damaged and sank in Lake Tetlin, AK, not being recovered till 1981 when it was taken to the USMC museum at Quantico, VA This photo is copyright © Richard Vandervord, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
