Although this was a civilian S-43, it has been finished to represent an aircraft of VMJ-2, San Diego, ca. 1939 that was destroyed by fire in 1942. Built in 1937, this "Baby Clipper" was delivered to Inter-Island Airways as NC16934 in 1937 and was sold to Alaska Airlines in 1949. In June 1951 it was damaged and sank in Lake Tetlin, AK, not being recovered till 1981 when it was taken to the USMC museum at Quantico, VA

A very interesting photo of a CNAC S-43 at the Kai Tak seaplane pier. Airline service to Hong Kong had barely started in 1937, but a control tower, built in 1935, seems to be visible, checkered, to the right of the tailfin. The CNAC logo, the character 中, seems to be painted on the rudder. Two S-43s were transferred to CNAC by Pan Am. NC16930 reportedly named Chekiang. Reg cancelled as 'exported to China' on 8 August 1937, but the aircraft crashed on that very day while en route from Hong Kong to Shanghai. The seven passengers survived but three of the four crew were killed. Photo from: SFO Museum

Delivered 28 July 1938 This amphibious seaplane is the only aircraft in the Museum that was at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on 7 December 1941. Ten JRS-1s were at the US naval base when the Japanese attacked during World War II. The Navy immediately sent these unarmed utility craft to search for the enemy fleet. The JRS-1 (used 1937-1944) is the military version of the Sikorsky S-43 "Baby Clipper."

Returning from its trip to Juneau, NC16927 again called at the City Float in Ketchikan but the flying boat spent the night moored at a settlement then called Wacker City, on the west side of Ward(s) Cove. More test flights followed and larger four-engined S-42s docked exclusively in Ward Cove according to local historian Dave Kiffer. These flights were discontinued in 1940. On 7 August 1938 this PAA Baby Clipper made an experimental flight to Juneau from Seattle, via Ketchikan. A landplane route to Juneau via Prince George, Canada was eventually chosen. This S-43 was later converted to twin-finned S-43B. Note the rather inconvenient access through a dorsal hatch to keep the hull watertight. Photo from: Dan Shumaker collection

This was the third S-43 for Inter Island Airways. Many sources claim that this aircraft became N326 at some point, but this is not correct (N326 was c/n 4342). This airframe was later preserved at the Pima Air & Space Museum, falsely marked as US Marines 1061. Photo from: Dan Shumaker collection
