The FH-1 Phantom the first all-jet aircraft operated by the USN and USMC being delivered from 1947, but with the rapid progress of jet aircraft at the time, was already obsolete within a couple of years and was withdrawn from front-line service in 1949, although it carried on with the reserves till 1954, by which time the McDonnell FH-2 Banshee and Grumman F9F Panther had taken over. This example was unusual in that it went on to be civil registered as N4283A in 1966 with Progressive Aero as a trainer. Now restored in the colours it wore in service with VMF-122, MCAS Cherry Point, NC This photo is copyright © Richard Vandervord, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
