Visiting NAS Jacksonville during a period when US President Gerald Ford and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat conducted talks at Deerwood Country Club and Epping Forest, then the estate of financier Raymond K. Mason, who headed The Charter Co., a conglomerate with extensive holdings in the Middle East. A crowd of 7,500 led by Mayor Hans Tanzler was on hand to greet President Ford when he, his wife, Betty Ford, and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger landed in Air Force One at Jacksonville Naval Air Station.
