The first prototype of the Short 184 - the designation was taken from its serial, although it was also called Short 225 after the power rating of its Sunbeam engine. The type first flew early in 1915, and 184 and 185 were embarked on a ship which sailed for the Aegean Sea on 21 March. One of these was the first aircraft to sink a ship with a torpedo, but the weapon was launched while taxiing!
