On display aboard museum ship CVS-11 USS Intrepid. This immaculately restored Fury is in the colors of VF-33 "Tarsiers" that flew from USS Intrepid. The squadron took part in NATO exercise Operation Strikeback from the carrier in 1957. The FJ-3 was similar to the FJ-2 but had an enlarged intake and the more powerful J65-W-4 engine. The leading edge slats were replaced by extended leading edges with fences. The FJ-3 started reaching USN squadrons in Sep 1954, starting with VF-173 "Jesters." A total of 538 FJ-3s were ordered, these equipping 21 USN and four USMC units. This photo is copyright © Arjun Sarup, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
