Cessna unveiled the Skycatcher design at EAA AirVenture 2006. A Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) meant for training and personal use, several of the first Skycatcher's off of the production line were delivered to the EAA. This third production aircraft was registered in June 2010. At one time some 1,200 Cessna 162s were on order, but production delays, performance and cost issues saw production end in 2013 with only 192 aircraft sold. 80 unsold airfames became a source of parts before scrapped in 2016.
