Ex RT520. Registration cancelled by the CAA on 29 February 1984: the CofA expired on 25 June 1963! Under restoration for eventual static exhibition, and displayed at Tattershall Thorpe since January 2022.

Ex G-AMWO (ntu). Previously preserved at Newark Air Museum, and moved to Aeroventure Doncaster during 1997. Cockpit section seen here in the course of renovation for static display in RAF Rescue yellow.

Ex Culdrose Station Flight, then stored at Blackbushe for a while. After the closure of Torbay Aircraft Museum it was sold at Sotheby's auction on 19 October 1988 to Caernarfon Airport. Stored at Aeroventure for possible restoration in the future.

Ex N7844S. Registration cancelled on 7 July 2003 as destroyed during the filming of a TV programme at Crag Lough, Northumberland on 30 May 2003, when it impacted the ground at low speed and was damaged beyond repair.

Cnetre section only, ex G-AZCM, G-35-155. Damaged in a forced landing in Switzerland, date not known. Previously used as a travelling exhibit by a local ATC squadron, and subsequently restored with what looks like a Srs. 1 nose section for display at Aeroventure.

This 1978-vintage Lynx is preserved in the markings in which it served 815 NAS aboard HMS Endurance in the South Atlantic, having been airfreighted from Brize Norton to the Falklands aboard an An-124 in October 2008. This is not the first time the Lynx has been on public display - apart from being in the static at the 2006 Yeovilton Air Day, XZ246 made an appearance at the Ideal Homes Exhibition in London in 1983!

XP345 initially served the CFS at Terhill in camouflage, later gaining the yellow overall scheme for SAR work. It is now exhibited by the Yorkshire Helicopter Preservation Group in the camouflage markings carried for service with the UN Peacekeeping Force in Nicosia, Cyprus while assigned to 84 Sdn RAF at Akrotiri. Displayed outdoors at the 2018 RAF 100 airshow at Cosford, this Whirlwind had the distinction of making the final flight of the type by the RAF - on 1st March 1982 it was the last to land of a formation of Whirlwinds in a flypast at Akrotiri to mark the disbandment of 'B' Flight, 84 Sqdn.

The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum houses some very rare helicopters, albeit in cramped conditions making photography difficult. Only the ninth Whirlwind to be built by Westland, XA870 first flew in May 1954 and was initially allocated for RN service in the Far East but was found to be unsuitable. It then spent much of its service life in these colours aboard HMS Protector and was notable for the rescue of scientists from Roux Island in Antarctica in 1956. A few days after taking this shot I discovered the wrapper from the 1960s Airfix kit of XA870 during a clear-out, long since forgotten!

Written Off in a landing incident at Keystone Airfield, Cambridgeshire. 20th June 2017
