Nicely preserved in the colours worn by the Silver Falcons aerobatic team after 1993. That year they lost ship #5 when it crashed during a show at Lanseria. Nowadays the team fly the Pilatus PC-7 Mk II Astra

Nicknamed "Spotty" for obvious reasons, this is one of 38 Cheetah C variants which constituted South Africa's only fighters until superceded by the JAS39 Gripen in 2008. Ecuador will now be the only country flying this Mirage-derived design, taking 12 ex-SAAF examples

Posed here alongside a SAAF Mirage F1, a typical adversary from the wars fought by Angola since its independence in 1975, about 20 of the 100 or so Mig-21s delivered are thought still to be in service. Three are said to have fallen victim to the Mirages, but one was credited with shooting down an SAAF C-130 in 1986 - which did not actually happen

The two-seater Mirage trainer variant was flown by the SAAF from 1964 to 1990, seen here in the camouflage colours of the era, so much more interesting than today's boring grey. There is doubt about the c/n of some SAAF Mirages and this one is quoted elsewhere as 1F-1A
