Built as Spitfire Ia, L1004 was modified as the prototype of the PR.13. After some period as a test aircraft it did briefly return to an operational squadron. An accident in April 1944 appears to have been the end of its career. Where the photo was taken is not known. The conversion appears to been done by Heston Aircraft at Heston aerodrome (now closed) and part of the test program was conducted at Boscombe Down. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
