Nicknamed "The Whale" by its crews, the A-3 Skywarrior is the largest and heaviest aircraft ever designed for regular operation from an aircraft carrier. Although long since having lost their strategic bombing role, the Navy used electronic warfare and aerial tanker versions of the Skywarrior into the 1970s and a few remained in test programs as late as the 1990s. six A3D-1 bombers were converted to YA3D-1Q (YEA-3A) ECM aircraft with a pressurised crew compartment replacing the bomb bay. Built as an A3D-1, in service with the US Navy as 130361. Based at various bases in its life. Converted to an A3D-1Q in July 1955. Redesignated as YEA-3A in 1962. Converted to an EA-3A in April 1963. To the Us Army in April 1963, also as 130361. Retired by the Army in January 1964, back to the Navy in March 1969. Transferred to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposal Center (MASDC) with inventory number 2A0039 in September 1969. To the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, loaned to Pima. Restored in the markings of the Naval Air Testing Center, Patuxent River NAS, in 1969.
