'Old Shaky' as flown by the 901st MAG, Hanscom AFB, MA till 1972

Formerly with the 155th MAS - 164th MAG Tennessee ANG. Retired to MASDC with inventory code CQ334 on 13 Aug 1973. Later transferred to the museum.

Of the 448 built, just nine of this majestic aircraft survive.

Development of the C-124 began in 1947. Based on the short-lived C-74 the Globemaster II was intended to give the Air Force a long-range heavy-lift capability. The Globemaster II entered service in 1950 and they remained in use well into the 1970s. Markings: 901st Military Airlift Group, Laurence G. Hanscom AFB, 1972

Delivered to the USAF around 1952 as 52-1004. Transferred to the 61st Military Airlift Wing at Hickham AFB with periodic detachments to Tachikawa AB, Japan between June 1966 and April 1971. Transferred to the 911th Military Airlift Group in Pittsburgh, PA. Transferred to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposal Center (MASDC) with inventory number CQ334 in August 1973. Loaned to the museum and put on display there in December 1973. The person underneath the nose gives a nice size comparison.

I think "ungainly" best describes the Globemaster. In its day it could pack a load.

52-1004 is now an exhibit at the Pima Air Museum.

What a thrill for any aviation fan to visit the wonderful Pima Air & Space Museum and wander amongst all these magnificent old aeroplanes.
