Actress and pilot Ruth Elder attempted a transatlantic flight with her instructor George Haldeman in her Stinson Detroiter American Girl in October 1927. Suffering an oil leak, they ditched in the ocean near a ship and were rescued. SM-1 Detroiters were used for various long-distance flight attempts. The earlier SB-1 Detroiter was a biplane.
