Prototype. First flew as WG760 in 1954. Used as a test and development aircraft. Last flight to Warton in 1961. To Weeton for use as ground trainer 7755M in 1962 then to St. Athan in 1965 and to Henlow for preservation by the parade ground in 1966. Moved to Binbrook in 1982 then to the RAF Museum at Cosford in 1986. Still there in 2024.

Two P.1As were built as research aircraft, which ultimately evolved to the Lightning supersonic interceptor. Both were present as gate-guards at RAF Henlow in 1982.

First British aircraft to exceed Mach 1 in level flight, on 11 August 1954. Now preserved at Cosford.

The ground-breaking design concept of the Lightning was so revolutionary that there were serious doubts within the British aviation establishment as to whether it would even get off the ground, never mind become the front-line fighter for the RAF. Two (Prototype) P1 experimental aircraft were commissioned that went on to vindicate the design and pave the way for the superb Lightning and its nearly 30 years in RAF service.
