There have actually been 3 aircraft that carried the serial '276', this one is likely the third '276'. The first one (a prototype, c/n 5168) was sold to Romania for an international competition. The second '276' (c/n 5271) crashed at Soesterberg due to wing flutter. The third '276' (c/n 5325) collided with '283' (c/n 5273). Photo from W. Muntinga

The D.XVI were vulnerable to wing flutter (vibration of the wing) during diving manoeuvres. The instruments were capable of indicating a max of 450km/h, often 250 km/h was reached twice. During testing, the aircraft crashed due to this wing flutter. Thankfully, the pilot survived. As a result, counterweights were added to the ailerons. Photo from W. Muntinga

The old fighter wears the orange triangle markings introduced 1 October 1939 but it is listed as withdrawn that July. Perhaps it found a non-flying retirement job.

14 Fokker D.XVI's (275 - 288) were delivered, of which the first few aircraft had a Jaguar engine. They were troublesome engines which often caused problems and the need for a revision well before the indicated maximum flight hours of the engine. 277 was equipped with a Panther engine in July 1932 and set an altitude record (9587 m / 31,453 ft) in June 1932. In 1935 the aircraft was equipped with a different Panther engine and a three-bladed prop (with no armament). The aircraft was eventually taken by the Germans at Texel. The pilot here is Gerhard Sandberg.

A razor sharp photograph of an early, Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar-powered D.XVI fighter. The markings are apparently Italian - it seems that 157 is an Italian MM serial number. The aircraft was not accepted by the Regia Aeronautica folllowing test flights. It arrived in Mukden (Shenyang) on 25 July 1931, shortly before the Mukden Incident. It was reportedly tested in Peking in August 1931. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

17 D.XVI fighters were delivered to the Dutch army. There were troubles with the Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar engines. This aircraft received a new Panther engine in 1935, and a three-blade prop. Apparently it was no longer armed. Photo from: Bodo Sandberg collection
