Nukulau Island was almost taxiing distance from the RNZAF flying boat base at Laucala Bay, which was 7km away. NZ4055 was sold in 1956 with the intention of being converted into a pleasure boat. Vingtor Airways was a short-lived Norwegian airline formed by former military personnel. Formerly JX419, LN-OAR crashed in the Lofoten on 5 August 1947 after a flight from Oslo. Here it is seen after an emergency landing near Pampus Island, off Amsterdam, one month earlier. According to a Dutch newspaper, it was flying 16 sailors from Fornebu to Trieste when the autopilot malfunctioned. The aircraft was painted red with cream trim. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives
