A strengthened variant of the abandoned Kl 105 which only had a 50-hp engine, the Kl 107 first flew in 1939. D-ESKL was the last of five Kl 107s built in the Nazi era. It was sent to Rechlin for trials in July 1941 but the Bü 181 Bestmann was preferred as a military trainer. Yet this was not the end of the Kl 107 as the Kl 107B entered production in 1958.
