DC-1 NR223Y after its record flight across the US using the Lear Model L Lear-O-Scope, which was a direction finding loop for navigation. The loop is visible on the cabin roof. NR223Y was sold to Howard Hughes for a his round-the-world but he used a Lockheed 14 instead. The DC-1 was then sold in the UK as G-AFIF. It ended up in Spain. The forerunner of all Douglas Commercials. The sole DC-1 on the day of its first flight from Santa Monica - 1 July 1933. Note the initial aerodynamic strut between fuselage and engine cowling - soon deleted. At date of image, the aircraft was owned by Douglas Aircraft. Quickly passed to TWA for airline tests. Here used by the airline for tests before delivery for commercial use on 15 September 1933. Bought by Hughes in 1936. Later to G-AFIF, EC-AGN and EC-AAE being damaged beyond repair in a forced landing at Malaga with Iberia in December 1940.
