K5783 was attached to the HMS Leander at the time of the photo. The Leander, a cruiser, was part of the Royal Navy's New Zealand Division and was transferred to the New Zealand navy during World War II. K5783 by then had been lost when it sank in 300 fathoms at Aitutaki on July 15, 1939, after slipping from the crane while being lifted on to the HMS Achilles, a sistership of the Leander.
